“Re/Marks on Power is an innovative, interdisciplinary, and historized account of the social life of annotation.”
“In this age of automated deception, reactionary legislation, and historical revisionism, Remi Kalir reveals, annotation offers a potent means of collective critique, resistance, and reimagining.”
You are an annotator. And so am I.
As a scholar of annotation, I’m the author of two books with MIT Press that explore the significance of this literacy practice.
Published in 2025, Re/Marks on Power: How Annotation Inscribes History, Literacy, and Justice is an interdisciplinary exploration of annotation that shows how this participatory act marks public memory, struggles for justice, and social change.
I am lead author of Annotation, a volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series published in 2021, which introduces annotation as a genre that is significant to scholarship and everyday life.
“Put Annotation on your summer-reading list. Spur a conversation with colleagues in your department about annotation and creative ways to use it as a teaching tool.”
“Very importantly, Kalir and Garcia point to the possibilities for annotation becoming part of a more democratic and open information infrastructure.”
My commitment to open knowledge and practice
